The power system, or as commonly described in sci-fi/fantasy novels, the ‘magic’ system, is a vital aspect of any work of fiction that delves into the fantastical.
In the Black Box storyverse, that which grants the characters the ability to perform supernatural phenomena is known as the Greater Self.
Imagine reality is divided into three domains. You have the metaphysical (or conceptual), the physical, and the spiritual. these three domains come together in varying degrees to create the reality that we experience.
The metaphysical is the domain that contains all of the rules that define reality. The physical is the domain that contains the substance (matter) that all things are made from. The spiritual is the other side of the coin to the physical, the mirror version of all that is, but existing in an altogether different state, and from which life makes its way into the physical world.
Now take these three domains and concentrate them into individual states of being.
The metaphysical gives you the mind. The physical gives you the body. The spiritual gives you the soul. These three states of being are the aspects of self that make up the totality of what we are.
The body, a vessel within which the mind and soul can inhabit. The mind, providing consciousness and a sense of identity. The soul, Giving life and a sense of self.
These three aspects of self/states of being allow us to experience the three domains of reality to a lesser degree of perception.
However, there are higher realities that can be perceived within each domain, and in order to perceive them, one must have an aspect of self that is of a higher perception than the lesser self. That is the Greater Self.
For those with Greater Minds, they are known as Sentiens.
For those with Greater Souls, they are known as Shaman.
For those with Greater Bodies, they are known as Seers.
Each of these grater aspects of self allow the individual to perceive and perform actions within the greater aspect of their domains, creating the supernatural effect of their actions within the lesser reality. As such, each of these categories has its own set of rules for how the powers work, and unique traits that give them an advantage over others in specific situations.
